We endorse Marty Campbell for the district 4 seat on Tacoma City Council. He owns two small businesses. Having the perspective of an entrepreneur on the council is fairly common in many cities, but it has become a rarity in Tacoma. The council has become almost entirely the domain of people who hold full-time employment in the public sector or non-profit organizations.

Political forums in Tacoma often allow candidates to make broad platitudes and generalizations, and visioning statements. Nothing wrong with these in moderation.

However, voters are often left with little no substantive basis on which to support candidates and are instead expected to base their vote on the number of yard signs they see, political flyers, statements from special interest groups, and newspaper opinions to make their voting decision.

The questions being asked to Tacoma City Council candidates this year from the Tacoma Sun are very specific and address such issues as the Winthrop Hotel, Parking Requirements, Tacoma Streetcars, and Felon Dumping Ground Issues.

A couple of weeks ago The Melon sat down at Forza Coffee Co. with City Council At Large candidate, Victoria Woodards. Victoria has been a member of the Metro Parks board since 2004 and is the current board President.

Heard via email from the candidate herself, although her public announcement is going out later today. So I haven't had the chance to find out what seat she's going for.

Woodards for Tacoma Campaign Underway! Announces Endorsement of Tacoma Joint Labor Council.

Last night Victoria Woodards officially kicked off the start of her campaign for Tacoma City Council, Pos. 6 by hosting a celebration at the Pacific Grill Events Center with over 200 energetic supporters, local musician Michael Powers and other key leaders. Alice Phillips from IBEW 483 also announced the sole endorsement of Tacoma Joint Labor Council at the event.
Victoria was introduced by Former Tacoma Mayor and Pierce County Council Member Harold Moss as well as representatives Alice Phillips from the labor community , Lua Pritchard a Tacoma Community Activist and Gary Nomensen, a Puget Sound Energy Executive.
Each representative strongly endorsed Victoria in her efforts and encouraged her supporters to become involved in her ongoing efforts to replace outgoing incumbent city councilmember Mike Lonergan.
In her prepared remarks Woodards stressed her commitment and record of community service and involvement for the city she has lived in nearly her entire life. Woodards also emphasized the three main points she wants to bring to the Tacoma City Council.
  1. Provide opportunities for working families and businesses in Tacoma.
  2. Upgrade and maintain vital city infrastructure.
  3. Work to make Tacoma city government open, efficient and accountable to the public it serves.
Woodards later said “This is just the beginning, we are going to take this campaign to each neighborhood of Tacoma and we are going to go precinct by precinct, block by block, house by house to get my message across to the citizens of Tacoma.”

Victoria is running for Tacoma City Council Position 6, the position currently held by Mike Lonergan.
“This campaign is about providing the people of Tacoma with the public service and leadership they deserve.” Ms. Woodards said in her release. “I want to work with the people of Tacoma to ensure that there is real economic opportunity for working families and businesses here. I will work to upgrade and maintain our cities’ current public infrastructure and I will demand that Tacoma city government is open, efficient, and most importantly, accountable to the people of Tacoma.”
“If anyone can help get this city moving in the right direction, it’s Victoria,” said Former Tacoma Mayor and Pierce County Council Member Harold Moss. “I believe that Victoria is the leader and public servant that Tacoma needs.”
In addition to her work as President of the Tacoma Metro Parks Board, Victoria is also a member of the Board of Trustees for the Washington State History Museum and sits on the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation Grants Distribution Committee. Woodards is the former chairwoman of the Washington State Commission of African-American Affairs, a member of Allen AME Church and chairwoman of the Joint Municipal Action Committee. Victoria is also a 1983 graduate of Lincoln High School in Tacoma.
